Dr. Gerard has been involved in teaching for the past 28 years. He utilizes unique teaching methods to educate students, patients, technicians, nurses, allied health professionals, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical residents and his fellow physicians. His combination of unique teaching methods are not available elsewhere, and are documented by the many testimonials of the individuals he has taught over the years. He refers to his methods of instruction as "Creative Medical Teaching". This site is dedicated to creative medical education, patient education, patient safety and quality assurance.

Dr. Gerard is a physician with Board Certifications in Diagnostic Radiology,  Nuclear Radiology, and Board Certification in Nuclear Cardiology. He completed his Internship in Categorical Medicine in 1981, residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1984 and Imaging Fellowship in 1985. He is Vice Chairman of Radiology at New York Medical College, and Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Westchester Medical Center, where he is also Director of Radiology IT.  He was formally Chief of the Division of Nuclear Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York for 20 years and was an Attending Radiologist at Maimonides since 1986. Dr. Gerard was also former Director of Imaging at the Maimonides Cancer Center. He has expertise in PET/CT, SPECT/CT, Diagnostic and Therapeutic nuclear examinations, Ultrasound, CT and General Diagnostic Radiology. He also recently completed Level II training in Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Gerard is also a graduate of the Touro College Physician Assistant Program and is a registered Physician Assistant.

Dr. Gerard utilizes unique teaching methods that increase learning and enhance memory retention significantly. He has appeared on Channel 7, Channel 4, Channel 5, Channel 31, and has appeared in multiple newspaper articles including: The Daily News, Newsday, The Nassau Herald, The Jewish Weekly, The Brooklyn Spectator and The South Shore Record. He has received commendations on his teaching methods from The Office of the Borough President of the Borough of Manhattan and the The Mended Hearts Group. Dr. Gerards teaching has also been recognized and received commendation by the Joint Commission (JCAHO) for unique methods of patient education and safety. Other commendations received include the Touro College Physician's Assistant Program, The New York Biology Teachers Association, St John's Law School, The Heart to Heart Group at Maimonides Medical Center, and many other health organizations.

Dr. Gerard has published over 80 articles, including 3 book chapters, has over 90 exhibits, posters and society presentations.  Dr. Gerard presented "10" Electronic Exhibits at the 110th American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting  held on May 2-7th, 2010 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego California, and  "2 Power Hour" Presentation. He had "4" Electronic Exhibits presented at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society April 26-May 1, 2009 at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center in Boston MA. He had 2 presentations at the  RSNA 95th Annual meeting 2009 in Chicago, Illinois and had 4 presentations at the RSNA 96th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting on November 28-December 3, 2010 at McCormick Place, Chicago Illinois. He had 20 electronic exhibits and 5 Power Hour presentations at the 111th American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting  held the week of May 2nd, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago. He had 3 electronic exhibits presented at the RSNA 96th Annual Meeting in Chicago for 2012. He had 11 projects accepted to be presented at the American Roentgen Ray Society Annual Meeting  to be held in May 2012.  He has lectured on multiple nuclear medicine and radiology topics including PET/CT and Emergency Nuclear Medicine.

Dr. Gerard is in New York Magazines "Best Doctors" Issue in the specialty of Diagnostic Radiology in 2000, and in the specialty of Nuclear Medicine in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He has also appeared in Castle Connolly "Top Doctors Guide" in the New York Metro Area from 1999 to 2011. Dr. Gerard also received the Radiology Attending of the Year Award (Resident recognition award) 2005 at Maimonides Medical Center. He received the Teaching Recognition Award from the Internal Medicine Department at Westchester Medical Center on June 16, 2010.  He has also taught the Lucy Squire Radiology Course for many years, previously under the direct supervision of Dr. Squire. He also tutored 8 residents in Louisiana pro bono who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina and they all passed the nuclear section of the radiology oral boards.

Dr. Gerard is the Founder and Director of the Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course, an intensive and unique review course for the nuclear section of oral radiology board examination.  The 3rd Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course on April 28, 2008 was attended by more than 100 radiology residents from around the United States. The 4th Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course was attended by 115 radiology residents, both national and international, and was held on April 27, 2009. The 5th Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course was held on April 19, 2010 with 140  national and international radiology residents in attendance. The 6th Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course  was held on April 4, 2011 and attended by 120 radiology residents national and international. The 7th Annual Nuclear Medicine "Hot Seat" Course will be held on April 9, 2012 (see "Hot Seat" page for course application/brochure and course specifics).

Dr. Gerard is the former president of the Brooklyn Radiological Society 1998. He is Associate Professor of Radiology at New York Medical College, Clinical Assistant Professor at Touro College School of Health Sciences, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the Arnold and Marie Schwartz School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.  He was also the former assistant Director of the Maimonides radiology residency program under the direction of Dr. David Bryk, and taught an intensive Emergency Room Radiology Course for many years to help prepare radiology residents for radiology "On Call".  Dr. Gerard is also the Medical Adviser for the Health Careers Exploration Program at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, New York (helping and guiding high school students in career decisions), and is also a former volunteer and graduate of the MEDEX program.

Amongst his many other interests, Dr. Gerard is a songwriter and singer and has written 20 original songs, and he is a musician and plays the trumpet, guitar(6 and 12 string), banjo(5 string), banjo/guitar(Deering 6 and 12 string), harmonica and keyboards. He has also studied the art of magic, computer repair and troubleshooting (software and hardware), boating, piloting, motorcycles, martial arts training (Sugar-Ryu Jiu Jitsu and Circle of One Ninjitsu),  Unicycling, Ventriloquism, and has significant experience with saltwater and freshwater fishtanks. He is also fluent in Spanish. These are just a few of his many, many hobbies. Dr. Gerard considers himself a rainmaker in the areas of patient education, patient safety, quality assurance and medical teaching. He is considered by many to be a "Renaissance Radiologist".  He assimilates the many unique aspects from each hobby to dynamically enhance his teaching and management skills.

Some have asked, "What next"?  Dr. Gerard is currently in the application process for an MBA degree. He also states there are many more hobbies to try and conquer, none too small or large, and they can only add to the final product. He is also working on an article and lecture titled "How to make time go by slower" (giving one more time to accomplish more activities in a day).

Dr. Gerard brings forth his experience in teaching, magic, computers and music to create a teaching atmosphere that allows one to learn at an accelerated rate with a very high knowledge retention. Remember, learning is empowerment. He remains dedicated to the concept and practice of "Creative Medical Teaching". Dr. Gerard also presented an original exhibit at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society in Boston, MA in April 2009 titled "Creating An Improved Radiology Resident: Techniques To Help Detect Critical Findings". This presentation utilizes many original creative techniques to enhance a residents observational skills.

Many of Dr. Gerard's society presentations include those utilizing Balloon Models as a teaching tool, one titled "Utilizing Balloon Models As A New Technique To Teach The Concepts Of Nuclear Cardiology" was presented at the ARRS 110th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California, and 2 projects on Balloon Demonstrations of Common and Uncommon Surgical Procedures were presented at the RSNA 96th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting on November 28-December 3, 2010 at McCormick Place, Chicago Illinois. Several balloon educational projects were recently presented at the ARRS 111th Annual Meeting held in May 2011 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago which included projects on mammography, bariatric surgery, pediatric emergency radiology procedures and urologic radiology (all demonstrated in detail utilizing simple balloon models), and all representing a unique method for resident education.
